Ave of the Giants Motorcycle Trip (plus a 10K!)

“Despite the weather” is never a good way to start off a trip report, but we’d been planning on heading up to the Humbolt Redwoods State Park ever since the gauntlet was thrown down between two friends to run the Avenue of the Giants half marathon. While we were not part of the actual head-to-head matchup for the race, the trip sounded like fun, and we figured the 10K option would be about right for our triathlon workout regimen. Plus, after finally biting the bullet and buying a brand spanking new BMW F800GS in February, it seemed to be perfect for an inaugural tour and shakedown before some longer trips planned for the summer. The other Dave, despite being in contention in the half marathon, didn’t have to be asked twice about riding his new KTM 990 Adventure up with us.
So for the weeks before the trip, I scoured the “Beasts” forum (large dual-sport bikes) on for just the right set of “farkles” (functional sparkles) to add to my new toy to be both utilitarian and maybe, just maybe, a little indulgent.
Here’s what I ended up with:

  • Jesse Odyssey hard side cases which, in addition to my Givi V46 top case, would give us 136 Liters (8300 cu in) of luggage space
  • Wolfman Explorer Lite tank bag for small valuables I wanted to take with me off the bike (netbook, camera, iPhone, wallet, etc)
  • BMW OEM handguards controls
  • Givi crash bars to protect the plastics and engine in the event of a tip
  • BMW skid plate to protect the lower parts of the engine
  • Grippy new knobby tires (TKC 80’s)
  • Adventure Designs toolkit which they claim has everything to take the bike completely apart yet fits under the seat
  • Micro pump that runs off the DC power from the bike.

  • Siphon (ran out of gas on Hwy 1 one time – a siphon would have had us back on the road in minutes)
